Het Achterhuis

“Het Achterhuis” (The Back House) is situated at the rear of a distinctive residence, occupying a unique location with a rich history. The site where the house now stands was once home to the farm’s cowshed. This history served as inspiration for the construction: the house was built in a traditional style that complements the Vrouwgeest Mill and the surrounding polder landscape. Its design draws inspiration from the old cowshed and barn that once stood here.

Today, “Het Achterhuis” is an inviting holiday home with a charming, country-style interior, located next to the Vrouwgeest Mill on the outskirts of Alphen aan den Rijn. It is a place where peace, spaciousness, and the characteristic landscape of the “Groene Hart” (Green Heart) come together. The house is fully equipped with modern comforts, including underfloor heating and a ground-floor bathroom featuring a washbasin, toilet, and walk-in shower. There is also a complete kitchen with a dishwasher and a retro-style fridge-freezer. The cottage is tastefully furnished, ensuring you will quickly feel right at home.

This cottage features two spacious, inviting, and fully appointed bedrooms, one on the ground floor and one in the attic. The terrace at the rear offers sweeping views of the polder and magnificent sunsets, with an open horizon and stunning skies; it is the perfect place to unwind completely. “Het Achterhuis” accommodates four guests, with a fifth person possible upon request. Every room offers a view of the vast polder landscape. The scenery feels like a living painting, constantly shifting with the light, clouds, and seasons—a painting that was once literally created here, though the space has since taken on a new purpose.

Ground floor

A spacious double bedroom is located on the ground floor. The box-spring beds and mattresses are of high quality, measuring 90 cm in width and 210 cm in length. Naturally, all-season duvets are provided here as well. It is possible to add a full-sized third bed to this room to accommodate a fifth guest.

Upper floor

There is a double bedroom on the upper floor. The box-spring beds and mattresses are of high quality, measuring 90 cm in width and 210 cm in length. Naturally, all-season duvets are provided here as well.

General information and prices

  • Price based on 4 guests, incl. VAT
  • Included: bed linen, kitchen towels, bath towels, and Wi-Fi.
  • Not included: final cleaning €75 (one-off) and tourist tax €2.50 per person/night, payable during the stay.
  • For groups of more than 4 guests or longer stays during the low season, please contact us for a custom quote.
  • School holidays and national public holidays: peak season rates apply.

Booking conditions

  • Minimum stay: 3 nights (depending on the season).
  • July and August: minimum of 1 week.

Arrival and departure

  • Arrival: From 3:30 PM.
  • Departure: Before 10:00 AM.

House rules

  • Pets are not allowed.

  • Smoking is not permitted in the house.

  • Use other than for tourism requires prior consultation.

  • Quiet/peace on the premises after 10:00 PM.

Our accommodations

We offer three different holiday homes. Each one accommodates four guests (with the possibility of a fifth guest). All the homes feature a fully equipped kitchen. Despite their rural setting, our holiday homes are centrally located in the Netherlands. Cities such as Leiden, Amsterdam, The Hague, Gouda, and Delft are easily accessible. This allows you to enjoy the tranquility of the polder landscape as well as everything the Randstad has to offer.
